MANILA, Philippines -- Doc Penpen B. Takipsilim has earned the reputation of a controversial doctor-poet, most of the time misunderstood, but he remains undaunted in his quest for philosophical innovations by experimenting through his now widely known “Visual Poetry.”
Recently, Doc Penpen who is also an actor-producer, has achieved recognition of sort when he was awarded as “Father of Philippine Visual Poetry” in a fitting ceremony held at Cloud 9 in Antipolo City.
Doc Penpen received the award from Manny Calpito, owner of the US-based OTUSA Internet Television and a veteran and multi-awarded broadcaster here and in the US. Calpeto is the man behind “Operation Tulong,” a radio program that earned him a Catholic Mass Media Award in 1981 for the “Most Outstanding Public Service Program.”
According to Caroline C. Nazareno of the World Poetry of Canada, Doc Penpen was “propelled by self-imposed advocacy, to be an instrument in bettering the world within his grasp, he continuously surveys the peaks and valleys of human emotions to find answers to his questions.”
Doc Penpen’s upcoming book will contain a collection of 50 visual poems, “all delicious morsels of his personal beliefs and convictions,” Caroline described.
Doc Penpen’s journey to liberating concealed realities through his visual poetry is definitely not a leisurely walk in the park but his critics are far outnumbered by his supporters.
Caroline noted, “It’s something that sustains the fire in his belly. From his followers and believers he draws strength that keeps him going and kicking. From them too, he gets the inspiration to walk miles after miles after miles. He knows that he may not reach his destination, but no one and nothing will and can deter him from enjoying the sights, the sounds, and the smell of his journey.
“If Doc Penpen is to follow the existing norms of poetry, he will be just one of them and that is not what he is aiming for. Thinking and behaving out of the box is what he has always been. He likes to recall that Van Gogh in his lifetime was disdained for a style that was way, way ahead of his generation. Van Gogh became one of the greatest painters of all time,” Caroline reminded.
Doc Penpen found a solid ally in Manny Calpito, like him believes that the primacy of humanity is non-negotiable. Mr. Calpito, an author himself, was challenged by Doc Penpen’s visual poems. He finds them mystifying in style but lucid in substance, disorganized in structure but tidy in essence.
