Carlos P. Romulo escorted Virginia Llamas in the pageant. After two and a half years of courtship, they married on July 1, 1924, in Pagsanjan, and honeymooned in Baguio. They had four sons: Carlos, Jr., (“Mike”) in 1925; Gregorio Vicente (“Greg”) in 1927; Ricardo Jose (“Dick”) in 1933; and Roberto Rey(“Bobby”) in 1938. ( See pictures below)

Gen. Carlos P. Romulo, most likely the most well-known Filipino abroad since he was the first President of the United Nations General Assembly. It is his statue that presently sits at the corner of U.N. Avenue and Roxas Boulevard.
Circumstances of war forced them apart seventeen years later, and they had no contact for more than three years. A stoic woman, she never complained and never showed distress—not under the intense conditions of war; not even during her final days in January 1968 while hospitalized for leukemia. HISTORY OF
M. LHUILLIER

Labucay Building

M.Lhuillier continues its remarkable expansion and marks another milestone as it recently opened its 1,400th branch in Labucay, Cebu. A touching aspect of this achievement is that it is M.Lhuillier’s return to its roots in E. Labucay Building, the same building where its legacy began 58 years ago.

The history of the Lhuillier Group can be traced back to its grand patriarch, Henry Lhuillier, a French national who came to the Philippines in the 1930s as a jewelry sales executive for Levy and Bloom Oceanic Commercial Department Stores.  He decided to stay when he married a Filipina named Angelita Escaño Jones.  After World War II, he ventured into various businesses, which included chocolate candy manufacturing, as well as an enterprising jewelry manufacturing and a money lending company.
Labucay was and remains to be one of the first flourishing commercial and trading hubs in Cebu. In 1948, the Labucays chose this location to have the E. Labucay Building constructed, a commercial building which primarily catered to jewelry stores.  After a fire a few years later, the building was rebuilt in 1953 by the owners, Estanislao and Anacleta Labucay who later passed ownership to their children including Esperanza Labucay-Cabahug.

According to Angelina Labucay-Escaño, third-generation manager and co-owner of the E. Labucay Building who inherited the building from their aunt Esperanza, the opening of M.Lhuillier’s 1,400th branch is what she considers a homecoming for one of their valued pioneer tenants, the Lhuillier's.

The second floor housed the first Lhuillier branch, initially a jewelry store, and personally managed by the Lhuillier patriarch, Henry. The store was eventually moved to the busy ground floor and transitioned its business operations to include and address the community’s evolving needs – financial services.

Henry proved to be a formidable businessman as his store gained popularity and loyal patronage among the locals.  Escaño recalls, “My relatives told me that Henry was well-loved by the community because of his friendly stance, and was often addressed with endearment as Tatay.”  His business steadily grew throughout the years and expanded out of Labucay.

As Henry passed on the torch to his children, his eldest son, Michel Lhuillier started M.Lhuillier, which was born in the early 1980’s as an offshoot of Henry’s financial service business.  The company grew leaps and bounds with the opening of branches nationwide to service Filipinos’ need for finances and jewelry.

To date, the M. Lhuillier Group of Companies is actively managed by two generations of Lhuillier, assisted by professional staff. The chairman of the group is Michel Lhuillier while his wife, Amparito Lhuillier, actively manages the fine jewelry stores and departments. Sons, Charles and Michael, hold the EVP positions and manage the day-to-day operations of the branches.

Their range of services has grown throughout the years. The company has diversified its business portfolio, which now includes quick cash loans, remittance services, jewelry stores, real estate holdings, construction projects, poultry farms, tropical fruit processing, bulk water supply, and deli & wine exclusively distributed at The Gustavian (branches in Banilad and Ayala Center in Cebu), one of the restaurants owned by the Lhuilliers that specializes in European cuisine and houses a British Pub called the Tap Room.

M.Lhuillier’s commitment to serving the Filipino remains as steadfast as it was 58 years ago.  The company helps “bridge” the way to Filipino dreams and aspirations, primarily through reliable community financial services.  Aiming to reach Filipinos wherever they may be, M.Lhuillier will number 1,475 branches nationwide within the year. This same commitment is also reflected in its goal to have a stronger presence in the international market through strategic partnerships and alliances.

Cebu City's top taxpayer and her scholarship have helped more than 1,500 graduates to this date. She is an educator by heart.

EDDIE ROMERO'S "AGUILA" (1980)
Philippine Panorama/ February 3, 1980
Now this movie is considered the no.1 movie made in the Philippines. A glimpse of the history of the Philippines.

"At a cost of P5M and a cast of thousands, two years in the making and three hours and a half long, 'Aguila' soars through the private life of a Filipino and the history of his country" says the banner of the Cover Story article of the February 3, 1980 issue of Philippine Panorama on FPJ's 1980 epic movie. The article was written by Chelo R. Banal
"The movie is called "Aguila" and contrary to what is being whispered about by birdwatchers, it isn't about an eagle that preys on parish priests. It took 12 stars, 60 production staff and crewmen, 7,000 extras, 120 different locations, and 100 days to film 204 pages of the script about the life of Daniel Aguila which traverses the 1890s to the 1970s."
"Aguila" (1980)- Stars Fernando Poe, Jr., Amalia Fuentes, Christopher de Leon, Elizabeth Oropesa, Eddie Garcia, Jay Ilagan, Chanda Romero, Charo Santos, Daria Ramirez, Celia Rodriguez, Orestes Ojeda, Susan Valdez, Sandy Andolong, Johnny Delgado/ Directed by Eddie Romero.
The movie, "Aguila" chronicles the passionate saga of the life and times of the Aguila family headed by the elderly Daniel Aguila (Fernando Poe, Jr.). Spanning 80 years, beginning with the 1896 Philippine Revolution up to the 70s, Aguila's family is unraveled through flashbacks and memories.
FPJ Played the role of Daniel Aguila while Charo Santos as Atty. Monica Salvacion Llamas who later became his wife. This Movie Inspired me to do my research on SOMETHING INTERESTING AND FUN ABOUT THE LLAMAS FAMILY OF THE PHILIPPINES.

FOREWORD:
This is a compilation of historical books, news articles, blogs, websites, comments, profiles from Facebook, Google search, Wikipedia, Yahoo.comAmazon.com, and many more about the Llamas Family of the Philippines. With the advent of the internet, age information is made available by the click of a finger which I am forever grateful for.

It has been a dream of mine to make a book or documentary about the Llamas Family. For as the great book states “a good name is better than gold.“ A good reputation is better than wealth a far more lasting legacy one can leave for one's family and love ones.

Just as the patriarch Abraham has done by doing what was right in the eyes of God and his obedience has blessed his family and all the generations to come has contributed to society and this world of ours. Building their nation as people belonging to God. From glory to glory their stories have been told and retold, again and again, serving to show that righteousness exalts a nation and sin is a reproach. .....

Christmas Symphony
The Llamas Family's Christmas Tree is filled with different musical instruments and gift boxes. This represents the various talents and blessings given to us by the Lord - that we should share in our everyday life. The gift boxes represent the different wishes we have for our less fortunate brothers and sisters, such as food, clothing, and education.

With the Llamas Family being in the music and live entertainment industry, interior designers Pamela Tan and Aivan Magno have designed the Christmas Tree to symbolize the vision and image of the family.

Maybe second toThe Fercolla Clan of Dagupan which they do every other 2 years since the 1930s.
Posting Emmies comments on my Blog:
Hello, Deo. I am amazed at your energy to write all about these!
I am one of the descendants of the Spanish builder Llamas of Marinduque. My father is Federico Llamas, son of Fabian Llamas and Concepcion Watiwat. They are from Mogpog. His other brothers are Bertuldo (the lolo of Zaldy Llamas), Leonardo, Dario, and Edilberto.
My Lolo Fabian has another brother-- Juan Llamas, who had that mestizo look. His sisters are Librada who married Florentino Narvaez of Mogpog and Lola Itay of Sibucao. I have no info if this Lola Itay got married or to whom.
This Holy Week I will be in Marinduque for work. And I would surely look for the other Llamas descendants, who according to Mogpog Mayor Senen Livelo, will hold a family reunion right on Easter Sunday.
Let us just correct the entry under my name. I was a Registrar in a Montessori school here n Cainta, Rizal, then principal in two private schools in Taytay, Rizal before I embarked to be a product lecturer and trainer of Gano iTouch Philippines.
I only became a teacher at Mina de Oro Catholic High School in Socorro, Or. Mindoro. I taught English.
Thank you for including my name here. My two daughters--- Maria Andrea Llamas Cruz de la Torre teach English online, while my other daughter Anna Divina Llamas Cruz-Ruiz taught in St. Jude Catholic School in Manila. Now she's currently teaching n Smallville Montessori.
While growing up in Or. Mindoro, I thought we were the only Llamas in the world. My classmates could not pronounce my surname correctly. They pronounced it YAMAS-- and in our province, it means the sapal of the coconut where milk was already extracted.
As a little girl, I would always grow furious when they would tease me YAMAS, YAMAS! I remember I chased a classmate with a 4-inch nail when he called me so. After this, I was silently wishing Llamas was not my name. Sigh.
As I grew, I'd known lots of Llamas (including the Andes mountain variety, hehehe).
I had Spanish class in high school and was very proud to conjugate the verb "llamar"-- yo llamo, to llamas, el, Ella, usted llama, Nosotros llamamos, vosotros llamais, Ella, ellos ustedes llaman!
And Llamas is my name!
Until now, as a speaker of a health supplement company, I would always insist they introduce me as Emmie Llamas-Cruz--- never mind mentioning I was a former registrar or principal in some private schools. I just want to be introduced as EMMIE LLAMAS-CRUZ...

Edward Roco Llamas
Worked at the Internal Revenue Service
(Revenue Agent (Retired)) U.S.A
Studied at Colegio de San Juan de Letran
Lives in Fremont, California

My father, Eduardo G. Llamas, was employed as a telegraph operator at Western Union in Manila. My mother, Nieve Roco, was a professor of music (she studied in Univ.of the Phil.). During the war with Japan, we barely survived annihilation. Yes, Antonio Garcia Llamas is a cousin thru my father. Amparito Llamas is my niece (daughter of a cousin). Eddie Llamas, La Salle goalie, is also a cousin but I barely know him because my father married quite late (in his late 40's while my mom was maybe in her 20's). We used to live in Malate, Manila while it is true most of my father's relations were living in Intramuros where quite a few were imprisoned and killed by the Japanese. My father died right after the war in 1944 from pancreatic cancer (some say due to worry and hunger during the war). My last job in PI was at Oceanic Commercial, in the Wholesale Drug Dept in Makati, Rizal. I married a Zamboangueña, Maria-Aurora Legaspi Hughes and have 3 children. We migrated to the USA in 1973 and became US citizens in 1978. We are now in our late 70's with 6 grandchildren, all in the USA. Before my retirement, I was working for the Internal Revenue Service as a Revenue Agent, doing corporate audits. I have suffered 2 bouts of colon cancer (1990 and 2009) and thank God I am still around. At present, I am going blind with Age-related Macula Degeneration and so is my wife with that, too, plus other ailments usually found with the aging population. That, in a nutshell, is a short history of our lives.

Claudia was born in Upstate New York and moved to Europe in her early years where she spent the rest of her childhood and youth. Thus she grew up bilingual English-German but also learned additional languages (Spanish, French, and Latin at school) and became fluent in Spanish when living in Spain for more than a year.
When growing up she had many interests. She became a professional windsurfer for a few years during and after her studies for her Master’s Degree in Sports Science and History, was a ski-racer before as well as a licensed ski-instructor. The windsurfing and the fact that her family is of international background has allowed her to travel a lot. Her biggest passion has always been in arts though (acting, singing, dancing, and piano) which made her move to Los Angeles in 2004 where she has been pursuing a career in entertainment. Claudia is very passionate about the arts and has developed well-rounded skills. She is the nephew of Gen. Francis Llamas. Recently Claudia Llamas Rankel is part of the cast of t.v. series Agent of Shield.

Another Reason to visit back to Cebu and consider it as the venue for our 2nd Gathering for the Llamas Clan 2020. A side trip to this new venture by the Lhuillier Group of companies a 300 hectares zoo just an hour ride from the Cebu city proper. Considered one of the biggest zoos in Asia will be one memorable experience for the kids and the kids at heart. I have been to the place and it was worth the time and cost.

I still remember those times when my father would bring me to the university church during Sunday masses and after which a play in the campus field is a most enjoyable activity. I remember him buying me always a box of raisins which was my favorite snack food as I am holding his hands while strolling in the green grass, remembered him saying that his papa Mayor Jose Fernandez Llamas use to be a professor of Law and a Spanish teacher in this university as prior and after his service as Mayor of Dagupan City. Antonio Garcia Llamas was a professor in college Fine Arts and Dr. Modesto Llamas served in the College of Medicine. So was Dr. Rosendo Llamas.
Likewise, Tita Fanny Llamas Baldovino serves as the campus librarian in the periodical section before she migrated to the states and my uncle priest Fr. Luis Jovellanos Llamas was a seminarian of this school as well. So generations of Llamas have kept the tradition in serving the academe and this University till now.
THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS IS THE OLDEST EXISTING UNIVERSITY IN ASIA.
In terms of the student population, it is the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus. The institution was established through the initiative of Bishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of Manila. On July 24, 1605, he bequeathed a modest amount of his personal funds for the establishment of a “seminary-college” to prepare young men for the priesthood. Those funds and his personal library collection became the nucleus for the start of UST and its library.
The founding of the University of Santo Tomas followed on April 28, 1611. The original campus was located in Intramuros, the Walled City of Manila. UST was first called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario and later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas, in memory of the foremost Dominican Theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas. (Go check Part 11 for further details of the History of UST)

The Varsitarian grew to be the country’s most respected campus paper is documented in the exhibit, The Varsitarian at 80: the Struggle and the Glory,
Those whose names have graced the Varsitarian’s staff box include Vice-President Emmanuel Pelaez, Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson, Archbishop Artemio Casas, Sen. Francisco Tatad, Governor Juan Frivaldo, Dr. Vicente Rosales, Ambassador Ricardo Endaya, Commission on Higher Education chair Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P., Press Undersecretary Isabel de Leon, and Akbayan chair Ronald Llamas and Secretary for Political Affairs of Pres. Pnoy Aquino Administration.

LAGUNA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS & ARTS
Burgos St., Calamba, Laguna
Atty. Tomas C. Llamas
President
Laguna College of Business and Arts (formerly Laguna Institute) or LCBA is a Private Non-Sectarian campus in Calamba City, Laguna. It is located at Burgos St. Calamba City. It was founded in June 1930 by its founder, Don Pedro E. Llamas. It is the first Secondary School in Calamba City.

MANILA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY

Dr. Antonio C. Llamas is one of the founding incorporators of Manila Central University. Here is the History one of the first established schools in the Philippines.

Manila Central University has a very humble beginning. In 1903, at the request of several students from the University of Sto. Tomas and other individuals, Dr. Alejandro Albert organized a private review class. This review class developed into the Escuela de Farmacia del Liceo de Manila in 1904, with Dr. Alejandro Albert, Alfredo L. Guerrero, Antonio C. Llamas, Feliciano Paterno, and Filemon Tanchoco, all faculty members of the institution, as incorporators.

This was the first educational institution of its kind established and managed by Filipinos. Its success demonstrated the undoubted capacity and ability of the Filipinos managing their own affairs in the educational field, especially then, when at that time of its initial organization it was barely 4 years after the establishment of the Philippine Educational System.

The Manila College of Pharmacy became one of the leading institutions of higher learning of its kind. It produced many prominent pharmacists. Stable and secure in its position, the college expanded in number in 1929. Its Board of Trustees, answering a long-felt need for the training of the youth for dental services, opened the College of Dentistry. Manila College of Pharmacy became then the Manila College of Pharmacy and Dentistry of pre-war time and now Manila Central University.

THE REVOLUTIONARY LLAMAS FAMILY
BY: Deo Antonio D. Llamas The Llamas Family of the Philippines.

Have been a part of our nation-building.
Their contribution is subtle humbly seen,
but in every region their mark is lasting. Tested in battles, pioneers, educators, Humbly I can truly say a family of heroes. leaders of man and revolutionary heroes.
Blazing love, passion, compassion, idealism.
Answers the call of patriotism in every way.
A sense of spirituality and true nationalism. Has been the tradition seen in the family. From politics, academe, and military service.
To artist, musician, writers, poets, journalist with lawyers, doctors, even beauty queens.
Inspired by Aguila the movie of FPJ the King An epic story of the history of the Philippines I ask myself why Aguila and Llamas family? As lead characters. So I go look for answers. I wrote a book: Something Interesting And Fun About The Llamas Family Of The Philippines. Documenting deeds and seeds of greatness, to give Honor to this humble and noble clan.
Even To this day, their Passion is passed on to, Which new generation will continually value Mind and heart for God, Family, and Country. The Legacy of our Revolutionary Heroes be.

A MESSAGE TO ALL THE LLAMAS FAMILY OF     THE PHILIPPINES.

                               By: Deo Antonio D. Llamas

My father has instilled in me a sense of pride in our Llamas family. And humbly I can share the Llamas family is a family of heroes. As I have come to realize after researching these documents about the Llamas family of the Philippines I have concluded that their deep sense of Nationalism is linked to their devotion and spirituality. A religious genetic predisposition as I may say awareness of greater purpose and purpose for their being, relevant in whatever field they are engaged in or circumstances. This family will lead and serve with passion and excellence. So with this book may their memories live on and will always be remembered.

I remember a book used by my brother in his Spanish class, the book was titled “Llamas de Nationalismo” or The call for Nationalism where the works of our National hero Dr. Jose Rizal which was in Spanish where discuss and dissected. That call to love our country and patriotism has been heeded and was tested several times in our country’s history. Having a deep interest in history I am surprised to see numerous acts of heroism by members of the Llamas family in their localities but never given national recognition for their sacrifices and achievements.

Collectively it spans from all regions of the Philippines from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. And so I humbly made this research to unite the family and create a Llamas Family Clan. We now have the Llamas Clan FB Group as a start. And we had our First Llamas Clan Grand Reunion in Cebu City last 2012.

I believe in this family and in a special way, it responds to the call of destiny and being the voice of change and answer the challenge to serve and lead. Seeing the past and the present Llamas's I see a greater future and brighter hope for this family. Having this book will give pride and a sense of identity to the next generation of Llamas. Knowing your family's roots is like a tree in a brook and like having wings to fly.

For the Llamas women who possessing grace and beauty like all the beauty queens in the family be a woman of substance worthy of honor and respect. For the brave man of the Llamas clan, we emulate our revolutionary forefathers who led and fought for what is right. Elevating the mind and heart. For God, Family, and Country.

I Am a Filipino
By: Carlos P. Romulo
I am a Filipino–inheritor of a glorious past, hostage to the uncertain future. As such I must prove equal to a two-fold task–the task of meeting my responsibility to the past, and the task of performing my obligation to the future.
I sprung from a hardy race, child many generations removed of ancient Malayan pioneers. Across the centuries the memory comes rushing back to me: of brown-skinned men putting out to sea in ships that were as frail as their hearts were stout. Over the sea I see them come, borne upon the billowing wave and the whistling wind, carried upon the mighty swell of hope–hope in the free abundance of new land that was to be their home and their children’s forever.
This is the land they sought and found. Every inch of shore that their eyes first set upon, every hill and mountain that beckoned to them with a green-and-purple invitation, every mile of rolling plain that their view encompassed, every river and lake that promised a plentiful living and the fruitfulness of commerce, is a hallowed spot to me.
By the strength of their hearts and hands, by every right of law, human and divine, this land and all the appurtenances thereof–the black and fertile soil, the seas and lakes and rivers teeming with fish, the forests with their inexhaustible wealth in wildlife and timber, the mountains with their bowels swollen with minerals–the whole of this rich and happy land has been, for centuries without number, the land of my fathers. This land I received in trust from them and in the trust will pass it to my children, and so on until the world is no more.
I am a Filipino. In my blood runs the immortal seed of heroes–a seed that flowered down the centuries in deeds of courage and defiance. In my veins yet pulses the same hot blood that sent Lapulapu to battle against the first invader of this land, that nerved Lakandula in the combat against the alien foe, that drove Diego Silang and Dagohoy into rebellion against the foreign oppressor.
That seed is immortal. It is the self-same seed that flowered in the heart of Jose Rizal that morning in Bagumbayan when a volley of shots put an end to all that was mortal of him and made his spirit deathless forever, the same that flowered in the hearts of Bonifacio in Balintawak, of Gregorio del Pilar at Tirad Pass, of Antonio Luna at Calumpit; that bloomed in flowers of frustration in the sad heart of Emilio Aguinaldo at Palanan, and yet burst forth royally again in the proud heart of Manuel L. Quezon when he stood at last on the threshold of ancient Malacañan Palace, in the symbolic act of possession and racial vindication.
The seed I bear within me is an immortal seed. It is the mark of my manhood, the symbol of dignity as a human being. Like the seeds that were once buried in the tomb of Tutankhamen many thousand years ago, it shall grow and flower and bear fruit again. It is the insignia of my race, and my generation is but a stage in the unending search of my people for freedom and happiness.
I am a Filipino, child of the marriage of the East and the West. The East, with its languor and mysticism, its passivity and endurance, was my mother, and my sire was the West that came thundering across the seas with the Cross and Sword and the Machine. I am of the East, an eager participant in its spirit, and in its struggles for liberation from the imperialist yoke. But I also know that the East must awake from its centuries sleep, shake off the lethargy that has bound his limbs, and start moving where destiny awaits.
For I, too, am of the West, and the vigorous peoples of the West have destroyed forever the peace and quiet that once were ours. I can no longer live, a being apart from those whose world now trembles to the roar of bomb and cannon-shot. I cannot say of a matter of universal life-and-death, of freedom and slavery for all mankind, that it concerns me not. For no man and no nation is an island, but a part of the main, there is no longer any East and West–only individuals and nations making those momentous choices which are the hinges upon which history resolves.
At the vanguard of progress in this part of the world, I stand–a forlorn figure in the eyes of some, but not one defeated and lost. For, through the thick, interlacing branches of habit and custom above me, I have seen the light of the sun, and I know that it is good. I have seen the light of justice and equality and freedom, my heart has been lifted by the vision of democracy, and I shall not rest until my land and my people shall have been blessed by these, beyond the power of any man or nation to subvert or destroy.
I am a Filipino, and this is my inheritance. What pledge shall I give that I may prove worthy of my inheritance? I shall give the pledge that has come ringing down the corridors of the centuries, and it shall be compounded of the joyous cries of my Malayan forebears when first they saw the contours of this land loom before their eyes, of the battle cries that have resounded in every field of combat from Mactan to Tirad Pass, of the voices of my people when they sing:
Land of the morning,
Child of the sun returning–
Ne’er shall invaders
Trample thy sacred shore.
Out of the lush green of these seven thousand isles, out of the heartstrings of sixteen million people all vibrating to one song, I shall weave the mighty fabric of my pledge. Out of the songs of the farmers at sunrise when they go to labor in the fields, out of the sweat of the hard-bitten pioneers in Mal-lig and Koronadal, out of the silent endurance of stevedores at the piers and the ominous grumbling of peasants in Pampanga, out of the first cries of babies newly born and the lullabies that mothers sing, out of the crashing of gears and the whine of turbines in the factories, out of the crunch of plow-shares upturning the earth, out of the limitless patience of teachers in the classrooms and doctors in the clinics, out of the tramp of soldiers marching, I shall make the pattern of my pledge:
“I am a Filipino born to freedom, and I shall not rest until freedom shall have been added unto my inheritance—for myself and my children and my children’s children—forever.”

Virginia Llamas, the Carnival Queen, is a well-known figure in historical narratives. I didn't know that my good friend and fellow poet Deo is related to her by blood. Seeing her picture at the onset alerted me that this is a very special book.
