Multiple Uses And Benefits Of “Batwan/Batuan” Fruit That Everybody Should Know

Philippines is blessed with a very high biodiversity, including the plants living in its remaining forest cover. Batwan which is also called Batuan, Batuan or Batuwan or Garcinia Binucao is indigenous to the Philippines and possibly Vietnam.
In Visayas, This native tree is used in Visayan sinigang versions. In fact, the fruit resembles a small unripe version of the mangosteen. In the island of Panay, the attractive tree grows tall and abundant, much so that the fruit found its way into the local sinigang dishes and the Visayan palette. A local would readily prefer a batwan sinigang than any cooked with another pampaasim.
Some trees, even their leaves have sub acid components like libas (Spondias pinnata). They may not be as popular as the ones mentioned but this does not mean they fail in comparison in flavor and taste.
The dried batuan fruits are an effective traditional herbal remedy for dysentery. In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine system, batuan fruits are employed for treating a number of conditions, including dysentery and gastritis. In addition, it is claimed that batuan possesses anti-inflammatory properties. When the bark of batuan trees is cut it gives out a yellowish resin known as gamboge, which has several uses. This resin is used in foods, medicine and paints. Moreover, this resin can also be used in the form of a rootstock for Garcinia mangostana (mangosteen).
It is said that consuming fresh batuan fruits helps to lower blood pressure and, hence, they are useful for people with hypertension. The resin or gamboge exuded from batuan is applied to the skin to heal irritated skin.
With great economic importance or potentials that were identified, Batuan is one of the 300 species of fruits. Sources say that this unutilized species is useful as a home garden fruit tree and its fruits may be eaten raw. Just like any other Garcinia varieties, this fruit can be preserved by slicing into thin pieces and then drying under the sun. They are used for making pickles.
