Doctors in the family

Considering the many contribution of the family in the medical field. We take note of the Doctors and health professionals in the Llamas Family. Pioneers and movers whose achievements and contribution has help in wellness, treatments and health education. Among the prominent Llamas doctors allow me to share this.

In the (UPCM)University of the Philippines College of Medicine at Diliman, Quezon city stands Llamas Science Hall donated by Dr. Rosendo Llamas stands as his legacy to his alma matter and set up Dr. Rosendo Llamas Scholarship at the College of Medicine for the bright and deserving students. Llamas Science Hall was used by College of Medicine, Department of Physics, formerly the NIP or National Institute for Physics was house here, now the Chemistry Department ( Pav 3) He also served as consultant for the Chinese General Hospital.

Another beacon of light is Dr. Modesto Llamas one of the most distinguished alumnus of University of Santo Tomas. Served as President of (PMA) Philippine Medical Association. To teach in the University as a Surgery professor, and treats patients at the Chinese General Hospital and the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center.

Dr. Rosendo Llamas

Some Pagsanjeños, who are rarely endowed by God with a civic conscience, generously gave substantial donations for the welfare of their natal town. Foremost among them are the many-splendored couple -- Dr. Rosendo R. Llamas and his wife Doña Guida Hocson. This couple financially supported the beautification of the town plaza and the reconstruction of the Catholic church.
Dr. Llamas donated part of his rice land for the extension of the Crisostomo Street and all his surgical instruments to the Pagsanjan Puericulture Center. Before his death in 1974, he donated P400,000 for construction of a building for the U.P. College of Medicine (his Alma Mater) and another sum of P200,000 as scholarship fund for indigent but bright medical students.
Doña Guida, from her personal funds, donated a P50,000 trust fund for the Pagsanjan Puericulture Center and a smaller amount for the restoration of the historic Town Gate to its original condition. It is interesting to recall that the National League of Puericulture Centers of the Philippines, in its Diamond Anniversary Convention (1973), conferred on Doña Guida the prestigious "Outstanding Humanitarian Diamond Award" in recognition of her humanitarian services.

Dr. Antonio Llamas. The first Pagsanjeño dentist.

Mrs. Carmen Llamas Intengan, a nationally known authority on nutrition. She was a recipient of the Presidential Award on Science in 1968.The first Pagsanjeña to achieve distinction in science.

Modesto Llamas: New PMA chief

A specialist in General and Peripheral Vascular Surgery, Modesto Llamas, a graduate of Medicine in 1965, was elected president of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) last month.
Llamas is also one of only three Filipino fellows in the American Board of Surgery and he currently chairs the Philippine Board of Surgery. He completed his internship at the Rochester General Hospital and his residency at the Boston University Hospital.
Even with his hands full, Llamas finds time to teach in the University as a Surgery professor, and treats patients at the Chinese General Hospital and the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center.

The exodus of physicians to nursing is the greatest challenge for Llamas as PMA president.
“We are trying to convince the government to improve the working conditions of doctors nationwide,” he told the Varsitarian.
Llamas also works for the right of Filipinos to quality health- care by campaigning for a comprehensive Magna Carta of Public Health Workers that will strengthen the rights of public health-care givers. He attributes his advocacy for underpaid and overworked health workers to his Thomasian education.
“Being in UST deepened my passion for helping the less fortunate,” he said.( note taken from The Varsitarian- The official Publication of the University of Santo Tomas)
