PART 10 SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT THE LLAMAS FAMILY OF THE PHILIPPINES BY: DEO ANTONIO D. LLAMAS

PILOTS AND SOLDIERS IN THE LLAMAS FAMILY- FATHER AND SONS
While I was doing my regular routine on facebook I was able to chat with Jay Llamas and was very glad I did. Along the way I was able to learn that Jay Llamas is a commercial pilot as well as his father Ernesto Q. Llamas having an illustrious career in the airline industry. Father and son both are pilots that are worth noting. While Jay had a stint in USAF. He was proud to tell me that her sister has a far more intensive experience in warfare. A lady soldier in the USAF another first in the family, she was assigned in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Her name is Ernestine Llamas.

Their grandfather came from Dagupan Pangasinan, was likewise a distinguished serviceman here in the Philippines Col.Ernesto Llamas and one of his son Gen. Francisco Llamas who recently retired in service is married to Dolly Torre of Bacolod who is the sister of Joel Torre the actor. Col. Jose Q. Llamas another brother of Gen. Francisco Llamas was also in the military service. They have a businessman brother Napoleon Q. Llamas. And a Lawyer by profession and a pastor at the same time of a Christian church ( The Potters House Christian Church in the USA) Pastor Julius Q.Llamas. Their sister Dr. Leonor Llamas Rankel ( Dr. of Medicine-Austria) and Agnes Llamas and Imelda Llamas both in Union City California. This family have distinguished themselves and are achievers in their chosen fields. I will post the list of Llamas soldiers, police, pilots and war heroes. The Brave Men of Courage. MANILA, Philippines - It may seem like a footnote in the avalanche of statistics about the four-decade communist insurgency in the country, but for 29 Army soldiers, Private First Class Edel Llamas, who died saving them, will always be more than just a name.

Llamas, a member of the 83rdInfantry Battalion, on Monday sacrificed himself in order to save the soldiers who were ambushed by more than 20 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Balatohan, San Miguel, Catanduanes.

The brave Army private did this by providing cover from his submachine gun, despite being pinned down by enemy fire, in order to allow his fellow soldiers to leave their truck safely as the ambushers did their worst.

“He selflessly sacrificed to save 29 lives,” Maj. Angelo Guzman, the spokesman of the 9th Infantry Division, said in a phone interview.

He said Llamas’s group was ambushed at around 1:30 p.m. while on board a military truck on their way home to camp. They had gone on a security patrol on information that the NPA was planning to bomb the hydroelectric power plant located in Barangay Solong.

The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), usually conducts a series of tactical attacks against government forces and private and government facilities in the run-up to its anniversary. It marks its 43rd founding anniversary on March 29.

According to Guzman, Llamas’s group was pinned down at the ambush site where the rebels had a vantage point.

“He was not wounded yet when he repeatedly shouted to his fellow soldiers to find a way to get out from killing zone. Ang paulit-ulit na isinisigaw niya ay ‘Baba na, baba na, ako na bahala ditto [he kept shouting, get down, get down; I’ll handle this]’ as he fired his K3 submachine gun against the ambushers,” Guzman said.

He said the military truck was crippled by at least two landmines that were detonated by rebels, who also simultaneously fired upon it.

“PFC Llamas provided suppressive fire against the rebels with his K3 sub-machinegun despite under heavy enemy fires. This brave act allowed the rest of the platoon to unload the truck then engage the NPA rebels in firefight before the rebels retreated,” Lt. Col. Rod Batang, commanding officer of the 83rd ID, said in a statement.

While scrambling for cover, PFC Elisio Gran was hit in his right leg and is recuperating at the Eastern Bicol Medical Center in Virac, Catanduanes.

Llamas, however, was not as lucky.

“He is a hero. He died saving his platoon, He died serving his country,” said Maj. Gen. Josue Gaverza, commander of the 9th ID, referring to Llamas.

    PROFILE OF WINNERS
    I. Philippine Army
    1. COLONEL TEODORO A. LLAMAS PA
    Designation: Acting Regiment Commander
Unit of Assignment: Light Reaction Regiment, Special Operations Command, Philippine Army, Fort Ramon Magsaysay, Palayan City, Nueva Ecija
    Years in Service: 30 years

As a young man, Colonel Teodoro A. Llamas PA entered the military primarily because he wanted to live a life full of adventure and experience to live beyond the ordinary. Prior to his assignment as the Acting Regiment Commander of the Light Reaction Regiment of the Special Operations Command of the Philippine Army, Col. Llamas honed his leadership skills leading various combat and non-combat missions across the country. More recently, Col. Llamas was at the forefront of the mission to neutralize the MNLF forces who wanted to declare independence from the Philippine government during the Zamboanga siege. Through his strategic direction and experience in hostage rescue and urban combat, the AFP was able to rescue 113 hostages and capture over a hundred MNLF fighters, on top of the seizure of high powered firearms. He also took the lead in organizing the first-ever Counter-Terrorist Unit, the Light Reaction Company, the group that continuously protect the country from the threats of terrorism. Faced with limited resources, Col. Llamas, more importantly, designed the low-cost semi-collapsible barracks that is still being used in the AFP today and saved hundreds of thousands in construction costs for the institution. On top of spearheading various community tree planting activities and rescue and retrieval operations, the Musang Band is also the brainchild of Col. Llamas, a group composed of the members of the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion who possess talent in music. The band plays in different community occasions portraying a different image of the AFP and delivering a message of lasting peace to the people of Compostela Valley. In his 30 years in the military, Col. Llamas feels that soldiery goes beyond the feeling of adventure but should hold a much deeper meaning that is to serve, defend and protect Filipinos who could not fight for themselves.
